As places that embody a sense of a less visible world, night woods are places where imagination and the unconscious mind come to the fore. This idea is further explored in Jasper's side project Augury Woods, which visualises an imaginary world based on faked witch sightings. These images further explore themes of wildness, magic, feminine power and contemporary horror tropes.
Though Jasper ventures in search of inspiring woodland to Wales, the Lakes and the Peak District, he mainly finds inspiration for his unique photographs in Sussex. “Ashdown Forest has particular heathland characteristics I enjoy - tall yellow grasses peppered with Scots pine - it has an almost savannah feeling,” Jasper reveals. “Other shots are among the big beeches in the Cowdray Estate woods near Tilgate. Stougton Down near Chichester has some great beech woods too.”
